Our History
The business started in 1926 and was based at 13 Arnesby Road in Lenton, Nottingham.
Mr Johnson senior Arthur R Johnson had initially worked for National Cash Registers and did not want to go to India so he left and started his own business looking after cash registers for some of the large department stores and public houses from Birmingham to Doncaster and as far east as Skegness.
He continued to trade during the war years and after the war one of his sons joined him in the family business which was located at Arkwright Street in the Meadows. His son then left and went to work for Gross Cash Registers. Arthur carried on but eventually was not well enough to continue, this is when his son Gerald took over and as the business continued to grow was soon joined by his wife Mavis.
Mrs Johnson travelled far and wide using local buses visiting shopkeepers and publicans as far away as the East Coast, she has said times were hard, No one had any money and those that did were reluctant to spend it on something to put money in.
Time marched by and soon another family member Ian Johnson was old enough to pick up a screwdriver and work out how the machines worked, working Saturdays cleaning key leavers on the old press-down cash registers.
Soon it was time to leave school and spend some time at College before joining the family business.
A.R.Johnson and Son became Johnsons Cash Registers and we headed for decimalisation when all the cash registers would have to function in £p rather than £sd.
Sadly Gerald died in 1972 and "Mrs J" as she was affectionately known to those who knew her well continued with the business with her son Ian looking after service and repairs.
Arkwright Street was demolished to make way for new housing in the Meadows and the business moved to Hockley our current location.
Mrs Johnson retired in 2000 and Ian took over the mantle of running the business.
